Primary cerebral lymphomas are rare, arising from lymphatic cells found within the brain. They represent less than 1% of all CNS tumors. They can occur at any age but is more common in the elderly. Males and females are affected equally. Geographically the disease is found worldwide.
This type of tumor spreads by infiltration of the cerebrospinal fluid and seeding within the central nervous system. In less than 10% of patients distant metastases occur to sites such as the viscera, bones and soft tissues.
Treatments
Surgery in lymphoma is usually limited to sampling or biopsy in order for a tissue diagnosis to be established. Brain Lymphomas are usually treated with radiotherapy either alone or combined with chemotherapy and corticosteroids.
