Alan B. Ettinger, M.D., is a nationally-known
epilepsy specialist who has dedicated his life to
helping individuals with seizures and related disorders.
Dr. Ettinger is the new Director of Epilepsy at Neurological
Surgery, P.C. Dr. Ettinger is a graduate of the Boston
University 6 Year Combined BA-MD program. He completed
his neurology and EEG/Epilepsy fellowship training
at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
He is a Professor in the Department of Clinical
Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
and has performed some of the landmark research related
to advancing the quality of life of persons grappling
with epilepsy.
Dr. Ettinger has directed numerous national and
regional epilepsy symposia. He has published widely
in peer-review journals on depression in epilepsy
and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures and has edited
several journal supplements and textbooks. Books he
has written have included Psychiatric Issues in
Epilepsy, Managing Epilepsy and Co-Existing
Disorders and The Essential Patient Handbook (a
guide for patients to better advocate for their needs).
Dr. Ettinger is on the editorial board of several
epilepsy journals, has served on national committees
of the American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy
Society and the national Epilepsy Foundation, as well
as the International League Against Epilepsy, and
is the moderator at the psychiatric interest group
sessions at the annual American Epilepsy Society meetings.
Dr. Ettinger is president of the Long Island Epilepsy
Foundation Professional Advisory Board and is a member
of the national Professional Advisory Board and the
Executive Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation
of America. He was the recipient of the Epilepsy Foundation
of Long Island’s 2004 Professional Achievement
Award and the co-recipient of the March of Dimes Long
Island Chapter’s humanitarian award in 2004.
In preceding years, he has often been cited in Castle
and Connelly’s and New York Magazine’s
guide to the best doctors. Dr. Ettinger has been inducted
into the Beta Gamma Sigma Society, the honor society
for achievement in Master of Business Administration
studies.
