DR. IVAN MIKOLAENKO

Ivan Mikolaenko, M.D., F.A.A.N., is a board certified neurologist with sub-specialty certification in neurocritical care, also known as a neurointensivist.  He treats patients with critical neurological and neurosurgical problems.  Common diseases he treats include strokes, ruptured aneurysms, brain and spinal cord injuries from trauma, seizures, swelling of the brain, infections of the brain and brain tumors. He also treats the medical complications that may occur in these patients.  His special interest is in reducing secondary brain injury and improving recovery and functional ability in patients who have suffered from subarachnoid hemorrhage and severe traumatic brain injuries. 

Dr. Mikolaenko received his medical education from Bukovynian State Medical University in Western Ukraine.  Following that he was a post doctorate fellow in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland.  He then continued his clinical training as an intern at the Department of Internal Medicine and as a resident at the Department of Neurology at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.  He finished his neurology training as a senior resident at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.  Then he became a clinical fellow and a neurology instructor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Division of Neurocritical Care at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.

During Dr. Mikolaenko’s residency and fellowship training he received numerous awards from the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association and the American Headache Society for his commitment to neurological education and research.  He has authored several articles in the field of neurology and neurosurgery.  He published articles in Lancet, Neurosurgery, Neurobiology of Disease, and Neurocritical Care. 

Dr. Mikolaenko is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Neurocritical Care Society, and Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association.
