Medical Pain Management Associates
Dr Muhammad
M. Khan, and Dr
Madan K RajBoard Certified Interventional Physiatrist, offering treatment of the Spine, Musculoskeletal Medicine and EMG/NCS at two centers:
- 600 Northern Blvd, Suite 113 Great Neck
- 353 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 303 Commack
The Doctors' and their staff offer “Technology
with a Healing Touch.” Pain in the
lower back and legs can develop
following injury to the spine or as a result of aging
and disc degeneration. When this pain is severe it may
be
associated with the release of certain chemicals which
cause inflammation and swelling. This inflammation
can
often be decreased simply by rest and common medications
such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.If
the inflammation persists despite these treatments, cortisone
may be recommended.
Cortisone (a type of steroid) is a very powerful anti-inflammatory
medication. It can be administered as pills
taken by mouth or with an injection. When administered
by injection the cortisone is maximally concentrated
at
the site of inflammation and higher doses are
possible with improved effectiveness.
An epidural injection ,which is one type of cortisone injection, places the medication in the epidural space around the spinal nerves. Once injected the cortisone is slowly released into the surrounding
tissues and decreases inflammation, swelling and
pain. The
goals of the injections are to decrease the pain to a
tolerable level and to allow the patient to participate
in rehabilitation and therapy while natural healing occurs.
Another procedure offered at The Spine Center is EMG, or Electromyography / NCS, or Nerve Conduction Study. EMG is a diagnostic test that involves the placement of micro-needles into different muscles to measure electrical activity and assess physiologic function of the skeletal muscles.
NCS is usually ordered to determine if there is or is not a neurologic deficit. It examines the peripheral nerve function through electrical stimulation and depolarization. Examples include nerve entrapment neuropathy (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome), polyneuropathy (generalized nerve disease), or trauma-related nerve injuries. The study can also distinguish between nerve and muscle disorders, the severity and extent of the disease, and help categorize the type of injury.
