Congenital spine disorders involve defects in or damage to a developing fetus’ spinal cord. It may be the result of genetic abnormalities, the intrauterine (uterus) environment, errors of morphogenesis, or a chromosomal abnormality.

The primary goal of treatment is to prevent the development of a severe deformity, rather than waiting until a severe deformity has developed and then attempting to perform a major and dangerous corrective procedure.
